TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology golf team got strong performances from Sanders Park and Tapat Wittayakom in Day 2 of the six-team RHIT Golf Invitational to move up a spot to capture second place in the final team standings Sunday.
Rose-Hulman shot a team score of 620 to tie for second with Thomas More College (Ky.), which also finished with a 620. Hanover College earned the overall team title with a winning score of 612.
Park (Alpharetta, Ga./Milton) fired a second-day round of 74 to finish with a two-day total of 147 to take runner-up honors out of the overall field. Park was just edged by medalist Michael Marcagi of Thomas More, who birdied his final hole to shoot a 71 Sunday and finish with a two-day total of 146.
Wittayakom (Chiang Mai, Thailand/Prem Tinsulanonda International) shot the best RHIT score of the day Sunday with his 72, beating his Round 1 score by seven strokes to give him a two-day total of 151, which tied for sixth place overall.
Adding to RHIT’s team score was Kent Kraus (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove) with a 159 (tied for 16th overall), Travis Whithaus (Robinson, Ill./Vincennes) with a 163 (tied for 22nd overall), and Sam Pastoriza (Camby, Ind./Mooresville) with a 175 (45th overall).
Competing as an individual, freshman Luke Peoples (Terre Haute, Ind./South Vigo) had a strong two-day round of 158 after shooting an 80 Sunday. The score tied for 13th overall.
Freshman Sam Mimms (Terre Haute, Ind./South Vigo) added a 167 in individual play to tie for 33rd overall.
The Engineers return to the course when they travel to the Hanover Invitational April 5-6 in Hanover, Ind.
