TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Sophomore Sanders Park led the field with Round 1 low score of 74 to help the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology men’s golf team to a tie for third place after the first day of the Rose-Hulman Invitational at Hulman Links Course Saturday.
The six-team field will conclude the two-day tournament Sunday beginning at 10 a.m.
Park (Alpharetta, Ga./Milton) shot a 38 on the front nine and a 36 on the back nine to take a two-stroke lead over four players tied for second with 75s.
The Fightin’ Engineers shot a team score of 314, which tied for third place with Thomas More College. Hanover College (307) stood in first after Day 1 and Wabash College (311) was second.
RHIT freshman Tapat Wittayakom (Chiang Mai, Thailand/Prem Tinsulandona International) and sophomore Kent Kraus (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove) each shot 79s, senior Travis Whithaus (Robinson, Ill./Vicennes) tallied an 82 and freshman Sam Pastoriza (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) netted an 86 to round out the Engineers’ team scoring round.
Competing as an individual, RHIT freshman Luke Peoples (Terre Haute, Ind./South Vigo) scored the second-best round of the day for the Engineers, finishing Day 1 with an 78, which put him in a four-way tie for 12th overall. RHIT classmate Sam Mimms (Terre Haute, Ind./South Vigo), competing as an individual, also shot a strong opening round with an 83, which tied for 28th overall.
