TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology student-athletes earned Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week honors in two sports for their efforts last week.
Freshman Carly Heibel (Fort Wayne/Lakewood Park) was named the league Softball Pitcher of the Week, and junior Ben Paras (Tucson, Ariz./Nordhoff) captured Men's Tennis Player of the Week honors.
Heibel helped keep Rose-Hulman alive in the chase for the final spot in the HCAC Tournament until the season's final game with a shutout against Defiance in the opener of Saturday's doubleheader.
Heibel tossed a complete-game four-hitter with allowed only four hits and struck out six Defiance hitters in the 1-0 shutout win to open Saturday's twinbill. She finished the week with a 1.75 earned run average in eight total innings of work.
Heibel finished the season with a .402 batting average on 51 hits, 16 doubles and five home runs. She also was 5-7 as a pitcher with six complete games, one shutout, 55 strikeouts and a 4.30 earned run average. Rose-Hulman completed the softball season at 7-9 in league play and 14-26 overall.
Paras finished the week with 2-0 marks at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles to earn Men's Tennis Player of the Week honors.
Paras won 6-3, 6-1 win in singles and claimed an 8-2 triumph in doubles in Friday's 8-1 win over Manchester. He posted a 6-1, 6-2 singles victory and teamed with Devon Fritz for an 8-2 doubles win in the 5-4 victory over Hanover.
Paras and the Fightin' Engineers have earned the No. 4 seed for this week's HCAC Tournament and return home against Vincennes on Tuesday.
