TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- Two Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology student-athletes were named Heartland Collegiate Atheltic Conference Players of the Week, in results released Monday by the league office.
Senior Devon Fritz (Lakeside, Calif./West Hills) was named HCAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week, and freshman Karson Nixon (Jasper) captured league Baseball Pitcher of the Week honors.
Fritz finished a perfect 3-0 in singles and doubles play last week to help Rose-Hulman sweep Oakland City, Greenville and Defiance. He improved to 5-7 this season and 27-22 in his career in singles play, and has compiled a 10-2 record at No. 1 doubles with fellow senior Ben Paras.
Fritz and the Fightin' Engineers have won five of their last six matches to improve to 6-6 on the season and 2-2 in conference play. Rose-Hulman returns to the men's tennis court on Saturday at Anderson University.
Nixon tossed a complete-game three-hitter in Saturday night's 6-1 baseball victory over Transylvania. The freshman right-hander coaxed Pioneer hitters into two doubles, struck out two batters, and allowed just three hits and one unearned run in the victory.
On the season, Nixon stands 3-2 with a 1.85 earned run average and 29 strikeouts in 39 innings pitched. His efforts have helped Rose-Hulman win four of its last five games.
Rose-Hulman stands 11-15 overall and holds second place in the HCAC with an 8-5 record in conference play. The Fightin' Engineers square off with Franklin College at Victory Field in downtown Indianapolis on Tuesday at 6.
