Four Fightin' Engineers Earn HCAC Weekly Honors


POW Weekgraphic WEBTERRE HAUTE, IND. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology student-athletes combined for four Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week honors, in results released today by the league.

Senior Julian Strickland (Indianapolis/Pike) was named HCAC Men's Basketball Player of the Week for a conference leading fourth time this season, as Rose-Hulman moved into first place in the league standings.

The Fightin' Engineers also swept the two men's track and field athlete of the week awards and added a third women's award. 

Senior Andy Hunkeler (Kokomo/Northwestern) was named HCAC Men's Field Athlete of the Week, and senior Andrew Thompson (Mundelein, Ill./Vernon Hills) earned the Men's Track Athlete of the Week award.  Senior Ryann-Rebecca Montgomery (Lafayette, La./Episcopal Acadiana) earned Women's Track Athlete of the Week honors.

Strickland led the Fightin' Engineers into sole possession of first place in the HCAC standings with wins over Franklin and Mount St. Joseph to earn his fourth HCAC Player of the Week award this season. 

Strickland scored 33 points, on 11-of-17 shooting, and drained seven three-point field goals in the 65-60 win over Mount St. Joseph.  The win moved the Engineers in sole possession of first place in the HCAC standings.  The senior added 17 points and six rebounds in a win over Franklin on Wednesday.  For the week, Strickland averaged 25.0 points and 5.5 rebounds per game, connecting on 56.3% of hit field goal attempts. 

Hunkeler won the NCAA Division III weight throw at the Terre Haute Double Dual with a mark that ranks No. 18 nationally.  His toss of 53’ 6 1/2” in the weight throw ranks third in Rose-Hulman history and earned a victory in the dual portion of the meet against Manchester University. 

Thompson ran the third fastest NCAA Division III time this indoor season in the 3,000-meter run Friday to earn Track Athlete of the Week honors.  The senior won the Division III race at the Terre Haute Double Dual Friday, setting a new Rose-Hulman school record in the 3,000-meters with a time of 8:35.33. 

Montgomery ran the fastest mile time in NCAA Division III so far this season to defeat NCAA Division I runners from Indiana State and Illinois State and capture Women's Track Athlete of the Week honors.  She set a school record with a mark of 5:05.80 that currently leads NCAA Division III runners this season. 

The men's basketball team stands 12-3 and 7-1 in HCAC play entering Wednesday's matchup at Hanover College.  The track and field squads return to action with the Rose-Hulman Friday Night Invitational at the Sports and Recreation Center this weekend.
