TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology freshman Brandon Benedict (Indianapolis/Perry Meridian) and junior Carly Heibel (Fort Wayne/Lakewood Park Christian) were honored as Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Players of the Week for their recent efforts.
Benedict was named HCAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week for the second consecutive week, while Heibel was honored as the conference Softball Pitcher of the Week.
Benedict led the Engineers to league wins over Mount St. Joseph, Transylvania, and Franklin with a perfect 3-0 record at the No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles position. The week included the first HCAC win over Transylvania by a team other than Earlham in 10 years.
Rose-Hulman improved to 5-4 on the season and is first in the HCAC at 5-0 in league play. Benedict improved his records to 7-2 in singles play and 7-2 in doubles with freshman Georges Adam. The Fightin' Engineers host Wabash in their next match on Wednesday.
Heibel tossed a pair of complete game victories to help Rose-Hulman sweep Transylvania on Saturday. She allowed four hits and one earned run with four strikeouts in the opener, before tossing a four-hit shutout with three strikeouts in the nightcap.
On the season, Heibel stands 5-1 on the season with a 0.91 earned run average. She has allowed 38 hits and just nine walks with 21 strikeouts in 46.1 innings of work. Her efforts include four complete games and one shutout. She also hits .304 at the plate with 14 hits, three doubles, one triple and one home run.
The softball team stands 8-6 overall and is third in the conference standings at 4-2 in league play. Rose-Hulman hits the road for Franklin College on Tuesday.
