HANOVER, IND. – With junior Stuart West leading the way, the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology men’s cross-country team saw a major improvement in its top seven runners as the Engineers placed eighth in the 19-team field at the Division III Pre-National Cross-Country Invitational Saturday at Hanover College.

“Our pack is really kind of coalescing over the last couple weeks,” RHIT head coach Geoff Wayton said. “Stu ran a great race out front and we had a really good gap of under a minute with runners 1 through 7.”

West (LaPorte, Ind./LaPorte) paced the Engineers with time of 27:04.69 in the men's 8-kilometer race to take home RHIT’s top finish at 32th place. Teammate Ryan Meyer (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove) placed 44th with a time of 27:22 and Sam Sobczak (Westfied, Ind./Westfield) was 53th with a mark of 27:36.

Rounding out the top seven for Rose were Matthew Billingsley (Moline, Ill./Alleman) in 58nd place, Charlie Fenoglio (Danville, Calif./San Ramon Valley) in 61th, Derek Heeger (Avon, Ind./Avon) in 73rd and Robbie Mayhew (Terre Haute, Ind./Homeschool) in 81th.

Fenoglio had a breakout performance in just his second collegiate meet, as he bested his previous personal record by more than a minute.

Rose-Hulman scored 284 points to finish eighth, just behind rival DePauw, who finished with a score of 243. Loras won the invitational with 66 points, Manchester (85 points) finished second and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps was third with 91 points.

“It was a great competition with a lot of teams from all over the country and our guys finished in the top half of the field,” Wayton said. “We showed some great signs that we’re heading in the right direction.”
