225 West RegionalsGRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Junior Stu West led the charge with his all-region finish to lead the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology men’s cross-country team to an 11th-place finish at the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional Saturday at Calvin College.

Rose-Hulman improved upon their 2012 finish by eight places, when they finished 19th overall. The 11th place overall finish is also the best team placing by an Engineers squad in over 25 years.

“To place 11th in our region is awfully good,” Rose-Hulman cross-country coach Geoff Wayton said. “We made some great strides and ended with some positives.”

West (La Porte, Ind./La Porte) finished 28th overall to snag his first all-region honor with a time of 25 minutes, 59 seconds in the 8-kilometer race . The junior went out fast in the race and then fought back to pass 11 runners in the final 1,000 meters.

Senior Andrew Thompson (Mundelein, Ill./Vernon Hills) rebounded from a tough 24th-place finish at the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships to cross the line second for the Engineers in 54th place with a time of 26:22.

“I was really happy with his performance,” Wayton said of Thompson. “He finished his career on a great note.”
