Women's Basketball Hosts Rival SMWC Wednesday

225 Morris IUSBTERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- With the 21st Clabber Girl Trophy hanging in the balance, the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology women's basketball team will welcome crosstown rival Saint Mary-of-the-Woods to Hulbert Arena Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. matchup.

The Fightin' Engineers (0-4, 0-0 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference) will look to defend their title after capturing the Clabber Girl Trophy for the first time since 2008 in last season's 80-74 victory.

Rose-Hulman is still seeking its first victory of the 2013-14 season after Saturday's 50-45 loss to Marian (Ind.) in Indianapolis. Senior forward Kelsey Ploof (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) led the Engineers with 12 points and a season-high 17 rebounds, one shy from her career best.

Ploof leads the Engineers in scoring and rebounding at 8.5 points and 8.8 rebounds per contest, which ranks third in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference. Sophomore Carrie Morris (Altadena, Calif./Mayfield) is close behind at 7.8 points per contest, as the guard's field goal percentage tops the conference at a crisp 63.6 percent.

St. Mary-of-the-Woods (4-3) last hit the court on Nov. 26, when the Pomeroys picked up a 70-64 victory over NCAA Division III-member Principia. Alaura McKemie (Brownsburg, Ind.) and Hailee Rittinger (Centerville, Ohio) led SWMC in scoring with 14 and 13 points, respectively.

The Pomeroys enter Wednesday's contest averaging 84.7 points per contest while giving up 86.4 points per game. SMWC has surpassed the century mark three times in 2013, but has also given up 100-plus points in four contests. The Pomeroys like to shoot it from deep, as SMWC averages 43.9 3-point attempts per contest, shooting at a 22.5 percent (69 of 307) clip. Ja'Breena Gardner (Indianapolis/Southport) leads SMWC in scoring at 12.1 points per contest, while three players -- Na-Shaun Rayford (Anderson, Ind./Anderson), Kennedy Nelson (Paoli, Ind./Paoli) and Stephanie Moore (Paoli, Ind./Paoli) -- average 9.0 points per outing.

SMWC holds a 14-6 advantage in the all-time series with the Engineers, which dates back to 1995. RHIT's Lauren Meadows (Indianapolis, Ind./Brebeuf) scored a career-high 23 points and Ploof added a double-double with 14 points and 17 rebounds in last season's victory at Hulbert Arena.
