cain-dcTERRE HAUTE, IND. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology rallied from a 23-point deficit to close within two points in the final minute, before Defiance College hit four late free throws to earn a 56-50 women's basketball win on Saturday.

Junior Lauren Meadows (Indianapolis/Brebeuf) keyed the rally with a team-high 19 points on 7-12 from the field.  Freshman Andi Evers (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) added eight points and eight rebounds for Rose-Hulman.

Other key contributors included freshman Cassidy Cain (Noblesville) (pictured) with seven points, four rebounds and four assists; junior Kelsey Ploof (Noblesville) with five points and five rebounds; and freshman Addie Johnson (Caledonia, Mich./Catholic Central) with five points.  Junior Jaci Dalton (Hamilton, Mich./Black River) added four points off the bench.

Kim Comden led all scorers with 22 points for Defiance, and Megan Zachrich also reached double figures with 10.

Defiance earned a game-high 23-point lead at 47-24 with 8:58 left on a score by Zachrich.  Rose-Hulman answered with a 12-3 run to move within 50-36 on a score by Dalton at the 5:47 mark.

The rally continued as Rose-Hulman enjoyed a 14-2 spurt to move within 52-50 on a three-pointer by Evers with 57 seconds left.  Meadows keyed the run with her own 6-0 run that featured four free throws and a layup.

Defiance junior Erica King buried four free throws in the final minute, and the Yellow Jackets had two defensive stops to hold on to the victory.

Defiance improved to 2-3 overall and 1-0 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play, while Rose-Hulman dropped to 2-2 and 0-1 in league games.  The Fightin' Engineers return to action on Wednesday at home against Manchester on Wednesday.
