Second Half Spurt Leads Louisiana College Past Rose-Hulman


FinnellEC2BIRMINGHAM, ALA. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology battled highly regarded Louisiana College to a 45-45 tie with nine minutes left, but the Wildcats closed with strength to earn a 78-54 women's basketball win on Sunday.

Freshman Heather Finnell (Decatur, Tenn./Cleveland) scored 13 points with six rebounds, and sophomore Erin Davey (St. Charles, Mo./Incarnate Word) added 12 points for Rose-Hulman.

Junior Donna Marsh (Mobile, Ala./Baker) rounded out the double figure scorers with 10 points, eight rebounds and six blocked shots.  Sophomore Lauren Meadows (Indianapolis/Brebeuf) contributed nine points.

Louisiana College finished 24-3 last season and showed its strength with its second half run.  Janet Butler led three Wildcats in double figures with 19 points.  Tillisha Givens had 15 points and 14 rebounds, with Natosha Gottlieb recording 15 points.

Louisiana College jumped out to a 32-20 lead with 4:57 left in the first half.  Senior Nicole Klass (Evansville/North) opened an Engineer rally with a three-pointer, and Davey scored the last five points of the first half to make the score 34-31 at the break.

The Wildcats maintained a 39-33 advantage, before a basket from Meadows, a three-pointer by Davey and two free throws from junior Alisa Dickerson (Elizabethtown, Ky.) put Rose-Hulman ahead 40-39 with 12:31 left.

Rose-Hulman regained the lead at 45-43 on a layup by Davey, before the Wildcats answered with a 14-4 run to begin taking control late in the second half.

Rose-Hulman dropped to 0-2 on the season and travels to Webster University in St. Louis on Tuesday night.  Louisiana College stands 2-0 following the victory.
