Men's Basketball Comeback Falls Short in Loss to Anderson

TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- Anderson University guard Phil Hogan scored 26 points and the Ravens withstood a late rally by Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology to earn a 60-49 men's basketball victory on Wednesday.

Hogan finished 10-16 from the floor and was joined in double figures by Andrew Bowman for Anderson with 10 points.

Junior Austin Weatherford (Cicero/Hamilton Heights) led Rose-Hulman with 14 points on 5-7 from the field.  Junior Jon Gerken (Defiance, Ohio/Tinora) also reached double figures with 10 points.

Sophomore Julian Strickland (Indianapolis/Pike) contributed eight points and a game-high five assists for the Engineers, with junior Nate Gissentanner (Conyers, Ga./Rockdale County) scoring six points and adding a season-high 11 rebounds.

Anderson led 11-3 after seven minutes, before Rose-Hulman closed to within 13-10 on a score by Gerken and 20-17 on another Gerken layup at the 3:41 mark of the first half.

The Ravens pushed the lead to 28-19 with a 9-2 run, before scores by Gerken and Strickland brought Rose-Hulman within 30-23 at halftime.

Anderson regained a 12-point lead at 35-23 on a score by Hogan, but Rose-Hulman rallied to within six points at 39-33 on a layup by junior Brenton Balsbaugh (Greenville, Ohio/Arcanum).  The Ravens answered with a 12-4 run to earn a 51-37 edge with 6:46 left.

Rose-Hulman chipped away at the lead and cut the margin to eight points at 55-47 on a four-point play by Weaatherford followed by a Gerken layup at the 2:21 mark.  Anderson held the Engineers to two points the rest of the way to secure the win.

Anderson improved to 14-6 overall and 7-6 in league play, while Rose-Hulman stands 14-6 on the season and 8-5 in conference games.  The Fightin' Engineers return to action on Saturday with a 6 p.m. home game against Transylvania University.
