Rose-Hulman Baseball Outslugs DePauw 16-9

225Klima BatGREENCASTLE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology scored eight runs in the fifth inning and five runs in the sixth to earn a 16-9 baseball victory over DePauw University on Thursday afternoon.

Senior Hank Akard (Indianapolis/Ben Davis) led the Fightin' Engineer offense with three singles.  Sophomore Patrick Klima (South Bend, Ind./St. Joseph) added two singles and four RBIs. 

Other key contributors to the Rose-Hulman offensive attack included sophomore Caleb Kissel (Plainfield, Ill./North) with two hits, including a triple, and three RBIs.  Sophomore Josh Hoeing (Rushville, Ind.) and sophomore Donnie Waters (Franklin, Ind.) scored three runs each for the balanced offense.  Sophomore Warren Whithaus (Robinson, Ill.) and freshman Drew Schnitz (Huntington, Ind./North) had two runs each.

Rose-Hulman crossed the 10-run mark in a game for the seventh time this season and scored a season-high 16 runs in the victory.  The eight-run fifth inning rally also marked a season high.

The offensive effort helped sophomore Daniel Sutherland (Centennial, Colo./Regis Jesuit) improve to 4-1 on the year, and senior Michael Bush (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Christian) earned his first save of the campaign.  Sutherland scattered 12 hits with three strikeouts in six innings, before Bush allowed just one earned run in the final three innings.

The DePauw offense generated 15 hits, led by Zach Starr, Lucas Italiano and Cory Meixner with two hits each.

The eight-run fifth inning included four Rose-Hulman hits and timely hitting after the Tigers committed three fielding errors.  Akard singled and Kissel later tripled home two runs to start the arlly.  Later in the inning, Akard added another hit and Klima drove home two runs with another single.

Rose-Hulman imrpoved to 18-13 on the season, while DePauw dropped to 12-16.  The Fightin' Engineers open a three-game HCAC series at Transylvania with a single game on Friday at 4 p.m.
