TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology sophomore Ben Menich (Mount Prospect, Ill.) tossed a complete-game four-hit shutout to lead the Fightin' Engineers past Carthage College 8-0 on Sunday.
Menich allowed just four singles with three walks and three strikeouts in the nine-inning shutout. The right-handed forced 14 ground ball outs in the contest to move to 1-1 on the season.
Offensively, Rose-Hulman scored twice in the second and fourth innings, then tacked on four insurance runs in the eighth to earn an 8-0 victory.
Junior Hank Akard (Indianapolis/Ben Davis) and freshman Patrick Klima (South Bend/St. Joseph) led the Rose-Hulman offense with three hits each. Akard scored twice with two RBIs, and Klima scored twice.
Senior Bobby Newman (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) added a three-run double and led the team with four RBIs on the day. Senior Jordan Chipka (Waterville, Ohio) added a single, one run scored and made a leaping catch to rob a potential hit in the fourth inning.
Rose-Hulman improved to 3-6 on the season, while Carthage stands 1-2. The Fightin' Engineers also won two of three games in the series with the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin foe. Rose-Hulman returns to action on Saturday with home games against DePauw and Concordia Chicago.
