HANOVER, IND. -- Hanover College scored three times in the third inning and had an eight-run fourth inning to top Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology 13-7 in the opener of a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball series on Friday.
Kevin Sears led the Panthers with three hits, three RBIs and a home run. Nolan Hall and Ryan Johns also had three hits each for Hanover.
Mitch Hunnicutt picked up the win with seven innings and one earned allowed for Hanover.
The Rose-Hulman offense was led by freshman Kody Alayon (Hammond/Bishop Noll) with two runs scored and two RBIs. Senior Matthew Turk (Addison, Ill./Addison Trail) added a triple and three RBIs.
Senior Bobby Newman (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) contributed a solo home run to the effort. Freshman Patrick Klima (South Bend/St. Joseph) contributed a single, one run and one RBI.
Sophomore Jake Althouse (Converse/Oak Hill) paced the Rose-Hulman pitching effort with 3.1 shutout inings and four strikeouts out of the bullpen.
Rose-Hulman stands 7-13 overall and 4-3 in conference play, while Hanover improved to 13-8 and 6-2 in league games. The two teams square off in a doubleheader on Saturday at noon.
