LEXINGTON, KY. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology
defeated Transylvania University in Saturday's Heartland Collegiate
Athletic Conference baseball action.
The Engineers used 15 hits to power to a 9-1
victory in game one, then followed with three runs in the eighth
inning to win 5-4 in game two.
In game one, Rose-Hulman featured five
players with two hits, lead by junior Matthew Turk
(Addison, Ill./Addison Trail) who also scored
two runs and batted in two more. Senior
Donald Stopka (Grayslake, Ill./Carmel
Catholic) hit for two doubles in the
Freshman Ben Menich (Mount
Prospect, Ill.) allowed one run on five hits
while striking out three batters to earn his fourth win
of the season.
The Engineers scored three runs in the second inning, then
followed with two runs in each the third, fourth and fifth innings
to answer the Pioneers lone run scored in the first inning.
Down 1-0, Turk walked to open the second inning and advanced to
third on a double by sophomore Andrew Benitez (Mililini,
Hawaii). Turk then scored the first run of the third
on a single by senior Jaime Weinle (Harrison, Ohio/Olney
C.C.). Benitez then scored on a single by sophomore
Parker Fulkerson (Terre Haute, Ind./Holy Cross
U.) and Weinle scored off a fielding error by the
Stopka then double in the third inning to score a run and scored
later in the inning. Junior Nick Pilipovich (Terre Haute,
Ind./North Vigo) scored in the fourth inning off a
single by senior Will Burchett (Mokena,
Ill./Providence Catholic) single, and Fulkerson
scored on a balk by the Transylvania pitcher.
Stopka doubled again in the fifth inning and scored on a Turk
triple. Turk scored the final Engineer run on a Benitez
Benitez and Fulkerson each led game two with three hits.
Benitez also hit for two doubles and scored twice, while Fulkerson
added two RBI's.
Senior Ryan Fuller (Fort Wayne,
Ind./Elmhurst) picked up his second win of the
season, throwing five shutout innings and striking out three
batters after entering in the third inning. Sophomore
Hank Akard (Indianapolis/Ben Davis) pitched out of
an eighth inning jam and tossed a scoreless ninth for his fifth
Rose-Hulman trailed early in game two as Transylvania jumped to
an early 4-0 lead after scoring 3 runs in the first, and adding
another in the second.
Benitez doubled, and scored on a Fulkerson double to reduce the
deficit to 4-1 in the fifth inning. Stopka added a run in the
seventh to enter the eighth inning down 4-2.
Junior Bobby Newman (Orland Park,
Ill./Sandburg) opend the eighth with a double and
scored on a Stopka single. Benitez followed with a double to
score Stopka. Benitez scored the game-winning run off a
Rose-Hulman improves to 22-8, 13-3 in the HCAC. Transylvania
fell to 15-16, 8-9 in conference action. The teams
return for the third game of the
series Sunday. The Engineers return home to face
HCAC rival Anderson University on Tuesday.
