OHIO - Mount St. Joseph relied on a strong pitching and
defensive effort to earn a narrow 2-1 victory over Rose-Hulman
Institute of Technology in the opener of a three-game Heartland
Collegiate Athletic Conference series on Thursday.
The Lions scored one run in the fourth and fifth innings, then withstood Rose-Hulman's ninth inning charge in the victory.
Ben Hunterman scattered six hits over seven scoreless innings to pick up the victory for Mount St. Joseph.
Rose-Hulman trailed 2-0 before scoring once in the ninth inning. Junior Derek Dauenbaugh (Bloomington, Ill./University) singled and advanced to second on a walk. Following another walk that loaded the bases with two outs, sophomore Matt Turk (Addison, Ill./Addison Trail) reached base to bring the margin within 2-1. Drew Ernst then recorded a strikeout to end the game.
Offensively, senior B.J. Zobrist (Eureka, Ill.) led the Engineers with three singles. Dauenbaugh and senior Michael Kovacs (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller) each added a double.
On the mound, sophomore Ethan Post (Rockford, Mich.) (pictured) tossed four scoreless innings with two strikeouts to lead the Rose-Hulman pitching effort.
Mount St. Joseph improved to 15-16 overall and 8-8 in league play with the victory, while Rose-Hulman stands 19-11 and 9-6 in conference games. The two teams complete their three-game series on Friday at 11 a.m. at Legacy Field at Prasco Park, located at 6125 Commerce Court in Mason, Ohio, with a zip code of 45040.
