Rose-Hulman News 1  Alumnus Named Georgia's 2007 Engineer of the Year in Government
Rose-Hulman

Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology civil engineering graduate Richard (Ric) Powers has been named the 2007 Engineer of the Year in Government by the Georgia Society of Professional Engineers (GSPE).

Richard Powers

Powers, the area engineer for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers-Savannah District’s Robins Air Force Base Area Office in Warner Robins, Ga., was recognized by GSPE for his outstanding engineering work, support of the engineering profession and community service during the past five years.

“Ric's achievements are outstanding, and he is a model which the rest of our engineers aspire to emulate," stated Homer McBrayer, chief of the construction division for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Savannah District.

Powers added, “I consider it a great honor to be recognized for such a prestigious award.”

Powers, a 1974 Rose-Hulman alumnus, is responsible for the construction, management, contract administration and oversight of military construction at Robins and Moody Air Force Bases, Forts McPherson and Gillem, and Dobbins Air Reserve Base.

Other outstanding career achievements for Powers include being awarded the first Robins Air Force Base Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) Post Presidents Achievement Award in 2006. Earlier this year, the Robins SAME Post renamed the award the Richard L. Powers Achievement Award for Excellence for his continuous support and dedication to SAME. The award will be issued annually.

A lifetime member of SAME, Powers was inducted into the Academy of Fellows in 2005. The designation of Fellow is bestowed on SAME members who have displayed outstanding and dedicated service to the Society and the field of engineering. To date, Powers is the only Savannah District civilian employee to have received the honor.

Powers was also the recipient of the Air Force Material Command Construction Agent of the Year (2005), Savannah District Supervisor of the Year (2004) and the Commanders Award for Civilian Service (1999). He has received the Best Area/Resident Office Safety Award for Savannah District in 13 out of the past 15 years.

Powers supports the National Society of Professional Engineers' MATHCOUNTS program for middle school students in his area and Professional Development Hours (PDH) Saturday for engineers. He also participates in church and local charities, and has volunteered to assist with hurricane relief and support functions for deployed service personnel families.
