The Rose-Hulman philosophy
The fundamental purpose of the Institute is to educate students
for careers in engineering, science and mathematics. The various
curricula also provide a broad and valuable analytical background
for graduates who choose to pursue careers in fields such as
business, the social sciences, medicine, and law. The Institute
strives to graduate scientists and engineers who are technically
competent and creative, and who are aware of the roles of
engineering and science in solving social problems.
To achieve these goals, Rose-Hulman provides students the basic
knowledge and fundamental principles on which science and
engineering are based. Students are encouraged to be critical
thinkers who are innovative in their approaches to problem solving.
In addition, they are introduced to social and philosophical issues
with which they must be concerned, both personally and
professionally.
Rose-Hulman emphasizes excellent teaching and recruits
professors who have a passion for it. Classroom instruction is
understood to be the primary responsibility of every faculty
member. Although Rose-Hulman professors maintain their professional
competence through such activities as continuing education,
consulting, research, and writing, a "publish or perish" atmosphere
is out of place on the Rose-Hulman campus. Rose-Hulman Institute of
Technology is concerned with the student as an individual and is
dedicated to excellence in the character and performance of student
and teacher alike.
It is the policy of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology to admit
students on the basis of their academic ability. Rose-Hulman does
not discriminate with regard to race, color, religion, sex,
national origin, or disability. The Institute does not discriminate
on the basis of disability in admission or employment in its
programs and activities.
