Graduate Studies Admissions

An applicant must submit a completed online application. The applicant must have three letters of recommendation sent directly to the Office of Research and Graduate Studies.

• In order to be considered for full financial assistance (tuition grant and graduate assistantship), fall term applicants must submit COMPLETE application materials to the Office of Research and Graduate Studies by February 15. Students applying in winter or spring will be eligible for tuition grants only. Graduate assistantships will be subject to student eligibility and availability of funds.

• Fall term applicants will be notified of admission and financial aid offers by March 15.

• Rose-Hulman does not offer conditional admission to gradaute students based on language requirements. See language test requirements below.

Application to the joint Master of Science/Doctor of Medicine degree program is a dual process. Students entering the program will be independently accepted into the graduate program at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and the Doctor of Medicine program at Indiana University School of Medicine. Admission to each degree program is accomplished independently, though applications should be submitted simultaneously.

Test Requirements

GRE: An applicant who is not a graduate of an accredited Bachelor of Science program in engineering, mathematics, or natural science disciplines offered by a U.S. college or university must take the General Test portion of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Although the GRE is not required for applicants from accredited Bachelor of Science degree programs in engineering, mathematics, or natural science disciplines offered by a U.S. college or university, the results of the examination may serve to strengthen the application. GRE minimums are as follows: Verbal: 33% Below, Quantitative: 60% Below, and Analytical Writing: 33% Below. Please recognize that these minimums scores will not ensure admission.

TOEFL/IELTS: In addition, international students must take the Test of English as a Foreign language (TOEFL) or use the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Applicants must have the Educational Testing Service (ETS) report TOEFL and GRE scores directly to the Office of Research and Graduate Studies. Official IELTS scores must be sent by that agency as well. The written, computer based, or internet based version of the TOEFL/IELTS is acceptable. Please recognize that these minimum scores will not ensure admission. For score reporting purposes, RHIT's insitute code is 1668. No department code is necessary.

Admission Requirements

Rose-Hulman recognizes two general groups of graduate students: regular students and special students. Engineering Management and predominately evening and/or off campus students will be classified as regular students or special students based on their enrollment/admission status.

Regular Students

Regular students are those who formally apply, are admitted, and enroll to follow an approved program leading to an advanced degree. Admission as a regular student generally requires that the applicant have a bachelor's degree in an appropriate undergraduate field from an accredited educational institution and at least a B average (GPA = 3.0/4.0). Under special circumstances an applicant who does not satisfy all of the above requirements may be admitted as a regular student if additional evidence of ability is provided. An applicant must be admitted as a regular student before he or she can receive any financial assistance from Rose-Hulman.

Admission to graduate study grants a student permission to pursue a master's degree program in the program for which application was made. A change of graduate program is not recommended since it requires reapplication to, and admission by, the new program. All financial aid accompanying the admission to the original program is forfeited by a student changing programs. The student must reapply for financial aid from the remaining resources. Students admitted with an undergraduate GPA below 3.0/4.0 are automatically on probation for the first quarter of graduate work. Admission as a regular student on probation means the student must have at least a B average (GPA = 3.0/4.0) for the first twelve credit hours of graduate study in order to continue their program.

An applicant who has an academic record that cannot be readily compared to the Rose-Hulman admission standards may, upon recommendation of the major department, be admitted, subject to any conditions stated by the Associate Dean of the Faculty. An individual so admitted is considered to be on probation.

All new graduate students should report to the Office of Research and Graduate Studies in Myers Hall, M246, upon their arrival to campus.

Special Students

Special students are permitted to enroll in courses, but are not admitted to a Master's degree program. The minimum requirement for admission as a special student is a Bachelor's degree in engineering, mathematics, or natural science from an accredited educational institution.

If a special student formally applies for admission as a regular graduate student and is admitted, courses taken as a special student may be included in the plan of study for a Master's degree subject to the following conditions:

1. Each course must be from the approved list of graduate courses and must be completed with a grade of B or better.
2. No more than twelve credit hours taken as a special student can be included in the plan of study.
3. The plan of study is prepared in consultation with the student's advisor and with the approval of his or her advisory committee.

Special students who wish to pursue a Master's degree are urged to apply for regular student status before completing twelve credit hours as any additional hours may not be applied to meet graduation requirements.
