Starting with the retirements of Drs. Houghtalen and Thomas in 2009, the department has seen higher than normal activity in terms of changes among the faculty. We were delighted to welcome Dr. Jenny Mueller Price to our program in the water resources/environmental area last year, and as noted in a separate article in this CE Echoes, we welcomed Matt Lovell to help us in our structures area this year. We also said goodbye this summer to Dr. Sue Niezgoda, who returned to her beloved western mountains for a teaching position at Gonzaga University. Finally, Dr. Jim McKinney has announced his plans to retire at the end of the 2011-12 academic year. With all of this activity, we have begun advertising multiple faculty positions in the department. With Dr. McKinney's retirement, we'll have six faculty members in a department designed for about eight. So, we'll be searching for two additional faculty members, one in hydraulics/water resources and one in construction/transportation. In addition, we've been granted permission to search for a ninth faculty member to support some other initiatives still in the development stages, and about which we hope to share more information soon. To broaden our search for all three faculty lines, we have advertised the ninth position in the geotechnical/geoenvironmental areas, although our final selection of the three new faculty members will depend as much on their fit to our department needs as on their sub-discipline. We hope our alumni and friends will help us by promoting our program to any existing or soon-to-be faculty members that may be well qualified. Please share their names with us. We will consider well-qualified candidates at the assistant, associate or full professor levels.
