Speed Lake
When you walk across the bridge to the Hulman Memorial Union, you pass between two small lakes. The one on the west side of the bridge is known as the Big Lake or Speed Lake, the unofficial name given its adjacency to Speed Hall. It's a beautiful reflecting pool for the White Chapel but also provides for activity like swimming, fishing, ice skating and the impromptu ice hockey game. Relaxing on "Speed Beach" is a nice break from studies. You may hear students and staff members tell tales of being "laked," a longstanding tradition involving a refreshing dunk on one's birthday or being on the losing side of a bet.
