Historical Notes

What is now known as the Rose-Hulman Women's Club is the result of a merger of two clubs -- the Rose-Hulman Faculty Wives' Club and the Rose-Hulman Secretary's Club. The membership of the Rose-Hulman Faculty Wives' Club voted in December 1987 to change their membership to include all interested women who are affiliated with Rose-Hulman.

Records of the Rose-Hulman Faculty Wives Club date back to 1946. The outrageous sum of $1.00 was the dues. That year, the club received $1.15 for cigarettes and $3.75 for the May luncheon. After disbursements including $13.05 for a July party and $10.66 for an October party, the balance at the end of the fiscal year was $10.16.

The 1946-1947 officers were: president, Mrs. Carl Wischmeyer; secretary, Mrs. John Bloxsome; and executive committee, Mrs. Clarence Sousley, Mrs. Clarence Knipmeyer, and Mrs. Irwin Hooper. (This was in the days when a woman's first name was not considered as important as that of her husband!)

The 1946-1947 members were: Mrs. J.L. Bloxsome, Mrs. F.L. Brown, Mrs. Phil Brown, Mrs. D.E. Criss, Mrs. A.A. Faurot, Miss Mary Gilbert, Mrs. M. Hansell, Mrs. I. Hooper, Mrs. B.A. Howlett, Mrs. R.E. Hutchins, Mrs. Oran Knudson, Miss Helen Mahley, Mrs. J. Newlin, Mrs. E.A. MacLean, Mrs. C. Knipmeyer, Mrs. J. Mason, Mrs. C.L. Mason, Mrs. T. Palmer, Mrs. J. Peddle, Mrs. J. Phelps, Mrs. D. Prentice, Mrs. Ralph Ross, Mrs. O. Rohde, Mrs. C.P. Sousley, Mrs. O.L. Stock, Mrs. F. Wagner, Mrs. C. Wischmeyer, Mrs. John White, and Mrs. Sue Krog. New Members were: Mrs. G. Haist, Mrs. L.S. Miller, and Mrs. G. Moench.

The secretaries began meeting for lunch as a group in 1983. In 1987, it became obvious that the needs of the women of Rose-Hulman would be better met should the two groups merge. And so, the Rose-Hulman Women's Club was formed.
