The Rose-Hulman Gun Club is a Student Government funded organization founded in the early part of this century, and recently revived during the past two decades. The club teaches firearm safety and responsibility while promoting shooting sports. Our organization is one of the largest on campus.
The club shoots rifles, pistols, and shotguns while participating in off campus events hosted by Proteq Firearms Academy, owned by Don Brannan. Mr. Brannan is an accountant by profession and a very knowledgeable firearms enthusiast. With his help, this organization has become very successful at promoting the interest of safe and responsible gun handling practices. The Gun Club attends four "Open Shoots" hosted by ProTeq Firearms Academy every year. On these days, students come to the range to shoot the provided firearms which interest them. They may also bring their own firearms. Many students have never shot before and are taught the basics of firearm safety and marksmanship. Rose-Hulman students, parents, girlfriends, boyfriends, spouses, faculty, and staff regularly participate. The pistol range has both paper targets and reactive targets (steel knock-downs). Later in the day, there may be an "action shooting" course of some type set up. This can be a course similar to those at an IPSC setup, or a bowling pin shoot. Clays are hand-thrown for members to challenge their shotgun skills, always a popular event at the shooting days. Participants also have access to high power rifle ranges of 50, 100, 200, and 300 yards. The .22 ranges are 50 to 150 feet.
The Gun Club's ultimate goal is to save lives. The most common reason accidents involving firearms occur is ignorance. You don't need to own a firearm to receive training. You don't have to like shooting firearms to learn about them. Even if you do not own or use firearms, chances are very good that you will run into firearms sometime during your life. Learning firearm safety is cheap insurance for the safety of you and those around you.
We want to give as many people as possible an experience of using responsible gun handling practices. We teach them firearms safety and marksmanship, as well as safe methods of storage, concealed carry, personal/home protection, hunting, etc. If one life is saved by the instruction provided, then it is worth it. All of our hard work, effort, late nights, and long hours have not been wasted.
Together, we can erase ignorance. Together we can save lives. Help support the National Rifle Association and the Eddie Eagle program which saves lives every day. Support the Rose-Hulman Gun Club so that we may continue in our effort to teach firearms safety and responsibility.
Remember, it is not the position of RHGC that everyone should own a firearm. The decision to own and/or carry a firearm is a decision that should not be decided upon lightly. It is a decision that should be evaluated on a case by case basis. If you are not competent to use a firearm in a safe and responsible manner, then you should seek help of a qualified instructor before a decision is made.
If there is more information that you would like to know, contact any of the Gun Club Officers. We will be more that happy to help anyway we can.
