Research for creative scholarly
activity is the foundation of teaching. A great technological educational
institution such as ours is based on research to provide the new knowledge which
we make available to our students through teaching. Excellence in teaching
demands that we possess an intimate understanding of the procedures used to gain
this new knowledge. Without such understanding, the teacher becomes simply an
automaton - adding merely a voice to the printed word. Our school's goal is to
be the world's best at undergraduate engineering, mathematics, and science
education; thus, it is essential that our faculty be committed to excellence in
scholarly activities. The Board of Trustees has instituted an award to
recognize, each year at Commencement, an outstanding scholar on the Rose-Hulman
Institute of Technology faculty.
