Installing X-Win32

Installable as: Localmgr (Click here for login instructions)
Install size: 180MB
Available from: \\rose-hulman.edu\dfs\software\apps\X-Win32\

This software will only work when connected to the Rose-Hulman network.

Installation Instructions

  • Login as Localmgr. (Instructions Here)
  • Click Start->Run and type \\rose-hulman.edu\dfs\software
  • Enter your username and password if prompted
  • Double click Apps->X-Win32
  • Run the copy of x-win71-1500sf.exe
  • Select a language (English) and click OK
  • At the welcome screen, click Next
  • At the license agreement, indicate that you agree, and then click Next
  • Verify your information and click Next
  • Choose the destination location, then click Next
  • Select the Complete installation and click Next
  • Click Install
  • The program will begin to install
  • Click Finish
  • Run the X-Config program by clicking Start -> All Programs -> X-Win32 -> X-Config
  • Click in the Other Tab at the top of the window
  • Uncheck the box labeled Automatic XDMCP Broadcast
  • Click OK to apply and save the new settings
  • Run X-Win32 by clicking Start -> All Programs -> X-Win32 -> X-Win32
  • Click Register
  • Locate the X-Win32 license key found in the keys.txt file found on \\tibia
    • Click Start->Run and type \\tibia
    • Enter your username and password if prompted
    • Double-click on Public->Apps->X-Win32->keys.txt
  • Type (or copy) the license key for X-Win32 into the license key box
  • Click OK after the license key has been entered

Configuring PuTTY for use with X-Win32

  • Open PuTTY, typically Start -> Programs -> X-Win32 7.1 -> PuTTY
  • [PuTTY Configuration] In the Session section, enter sliderule.rose-hulman.edu as the Host Name
  • The Port will be 22 and the Protocol will be SSH
  • Click on Tunnels located under Connection, SSH
  • Click Enable X11 forwarding so it is checked
  • Click Open

Configuring SecureCRT for use with X-Win32

  • Make sure you have SecureCRT (Click here if not)
  • Make sure you already have sessions for Abacus and Sliderule setup (Click here if not)
  • Launch SecureCRT
  • Open the Connect window (it may already be open)
  • Right click on the session for Abacus and click Properties
  • In the tree on the left, expand Connection and Port Forwarding and click on X11
  • Check the Forward X11 Packets box
  • Click OK
  • Repeat the previous 4 steps for Sliderule

Using X-Win32 under Windows XP with SecureCRT

  • To start X-Win32, go to Start->All Programs->X-Win32 7.1->X-Win32
  • If you are prompted to create a session, click Cancel
  • In the system tray, next to the clock, there should be an X icon
  • Start SecureCRT by going to Start->Programs->SecureCRT->SecureCRT
  • Click on either Abacus or Sliderule
  • If prompted about a host public key, click Accept and Save
  • Enter your username and password when prompted
  • When you launch an X application like Maple or Matlab, append an ampersand after the program name (i.e. xmaple &) so that you can run other applications while Maple is running
  • When you are finished, close the open X applications and type logout in SecureCRT
  • Then close X-Win32 by right-clicking on the X icon in the system tray and clicking Close

Configuring a font server (needed for Mathmatica)

  • Start X-Win32 by going go to Start->All Programs->X-Win32 7.1->X-Win32
  • If you are prompted to create a session, click Cancel
  • In the system tray, next to the clock, there should be an X icon
  • Right click on the X icon
  • Click XConfig
  • Click Font
  • Click "Add Font Server..."
  • Enter the host sliderule.rose-hulman.edu
  • Change the port to be 7101
  • Click OK
  • Click OK
