Printing via Print

Some printers are networked but are not direct print enabled. Those printers are hosted by the Windows server named Print.

For long-term use, direct printing is preferable. Instructions for configuring a computer for direct printing are located on our Direct Printing guide.

To add a printer, click Start -> Run, enter \\print, click OK, and then double-click on the appropriate printer. The drivers will be downloaded to your machine and the printer installed automatically. If you attempt to add a printer that you do not have access to, you will receive an "Access is denied" error message.

Migrating from Tibia to Print

When a printer from Print is added to a student laptop, it is important that the proper procedure is followed. This procedure is described in detail below, but the basic steps are to connect to Print (\\print) and when prompted to enter your username and password, enter them and click the "Remember my password" checkbox. This will prevent future "access denied" problems.

If you want to add a new printer, like a residence hall printer, click Start -> Run and enter \\print in the Open textbox. This also applies if you already have all the printers you need installed but are getting "access denied" messages when you try to print.

When prompted for your user name and password, enter your user name with @rose-hulman.edu attached. For example, user jones1 would supply jones1@rose-hulman.edu as the user name. Be sure to check the "Remember my password" checkbox, and then click OK. If the "Remember my password" checkbox is not checked, you will have problems using the printers installed through Print.

Find the printer you want to install and double-click it to install it. In this example I'm installing the Crapo 2 printer, which is located on the second floor of Crapo Hall.

Your computer will connect to Print to install the device driver for the selected printer.

When the driver installation completes you should have a new printer installed on your computer.

From now on you should be able to print to this printer and any other printer installed from Print without being prompted for your user name and password.

What happens when the "Remember my password" option isn't clicked? When you try to print through an application, like NOTEPAD in this example, you receive an "access denied" message similar to the one shown below.

If you click Start -> Settings -> Printers and Faxes or open the Control Panel and select Printers and Other Hardware, you should see a list of installed printers. Note that in this example, my access to the Crapo 2 printer is denied and my computer is unable to connect.

In order to establish access, click Start -> Run and enter \\print in the Open textbox, as described above. When prompted for your user name and password enter network user name with @rose-hulman.edu appended to it. For example, user jones1 would enter jones1@rose-hulman.edu in the user name field. Then select the "Remember my password" checkbox and click OK. This will automatically enable your system to connect to Print to use any of the printers installed from it.

Once an authenticated connection to Print is established, the status on the printer changes to Ready, as shown below.
