Blacklists
In addition to Barracuda Spam Firewall, the Rose-Hulman email servers implement an anti-spam blacklist.
The blacklist contains domains and email addresses that produce large volumes of spam (or viruses). This prevents email from being sent to or received from anything in the blacklist. The blacklist is automatically updated about 5 times per day.
When you send an email to an address in the blacklist, you should receive a message similar to the following:
- ERROR:550 Access Denied due to excessive SPAM/Virus from network
- ERROR:550 "Blocked by http://www.stearns.org/sa-blacklist/"
Depending on the nature of the email, there are two options:
- Wait 4-5 hours, and then try sending your email again. The blacklist is updated frequently and the email address you were sending to may only have been on the blacklist temporarily.
- If the email is more time sensitive, contact the IAIT Help Desk with the error message you received and the email address you are sending to. Domains or email addresses can be removed from the blacklist as needed.
