Download/Upload Amounts
Internet bandwidth is a shared resource for the whole campus community. Any user who downloads or uploads an excessive amount of data may adversely impact others trying to use the network. To help prevent this situation IAIT has instituted the following download and upload limits:
| Duration | Incoming data | Outgoing data |
|---|---|---|
| 24 hours | 3 GB (3,000,000,000 bytes) | 3 GB (3,000,000,000 bytes) |
| 72 hours | 5 GB (3,000,000,000 bytes) | 5 GB (3,000,000,000 bytes) |
Downloads and uploads are couted seperately so if a user downloads 2 GB of data and uploads 1 GB of data in one day they will not exceed the limit
If a user downloads or uploads more than 3 GB within a 24 hour period or 5 GB within a 72 hour period, an autogenerated email, similar to the following, will be sent to the user:
This is an automated email message, a copy of which has also
been sent to the network managers. In an effort to provide
fair and equitable access to Internet-based resources, IAIT
staff has implemented automated notification of those users
exceeding a prescribed level of Internet usage. This level is
3 gigabytes of incoming or outgoing data per day. Continued use
exceeding this level may require appropriate dialogue with
IAIT network managers. Please refer to:

You may check your usage amounts at

that queries can take upwards of 20 to 30 seconds.
Your traffic totals are as follows:
Exceeding the limits specified in the table above will result in bandwidth restrictions (to and from the Internet, but not internally) of 28Kbps for a period of 7 days on the offending computer/device. The number of warning notifications per time period are listed below.
- 3 1-day warning notifications in a two-week period
- 5 3-day warning notifications in a two-week period
- 6 total warning notifications of any kind in a two-week period
- Each warning notification beyond the tenth over your entire time at Rose-Hulman
In cases of extreme abuse, immediate action will be taken. Extreme abuse is determined by IAIT.
Continued violation will result in a longer period of restricted bandwidth. This includes the option of a permanent restriction.
A bandwidth limit may be appealed through the following chain of appeals:
- Contact IAIT via the Help Desk (8989), or by responding to the bandwidth limit email. If this appeal fails, then:
- Schedule a meeting with the Vice-President of IAIT by calling 8158. If this appeal fails, then:
- Schedule a meeting with the Vice-President/Dean of Student Affairs by calling 8257.
In the event of an appeal, the bandwidth limit will remain in place until the appeal is decided.
You may check your current download amount using the Network Usage Tool. Please note that queries may take upwards of 20 to 30 seconds.
