WHAT IS ILL?
ILL allows you to retrieve resources when Logan Library resources cannot satisfy your information needs. You can borrow books and photocopies of journal articles and/or book sections (chapters, etc.). ILL cannot be used to borrow textbooks needed for class. Always check to see if Rose-Hulman has a journal before putting in an ILL request for the availability of items. ILL can only be used for items the Logan Library does not own or are lost.

HOW DO I SUBMIT REQUESTS?
There are three ways to submit ILL requests.

  1. Online ILL forms for article and book requests, http://www.rose-hulman.edu/Library/ill/ILL.php

  2. ILL forms are available at the Circulation Desk. These forms can be attached to the front of any printouts. Fill out the information in the upper right hand corner.

  3. Copy/Printout from a database search or bibliography from an article or book. Highlight needed sources and put name and campus box # on the page [if multiple pages please staple together].

WHAT WILL IT COST ME?

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO RECEIVE MY ILL REQUESTS?
Books can take from four to ten days.
Articles can be received in one to seven days. Photocopies received via mail will be sent to your campus mailbox. Electronic copies will be sent via email as a .pdf attachment.

HOW WILL I BE NOTIFIED WHEN MY ILL REQUEST HAS ARRIVED?
For books; you will be notified via email that you can pick items up at the Circulation Desk.  Articles will be sent either to your email or your campus mailbox, depending on which way it is delivered to ILL.

HOW LONG CAN I BORROW THE BOOKS?
Although it can take four to ten weeks to receive books, you still need to plan ahead in requesting materials. Lending libraries determine the due dates. I do not. Due dates can range from seven to 30 days. Pay attention to the date due on the sticker on the front of the ILL book.  You will be sent a notice one week before the book is due. You can ask for a renewal unless otherwise stated on the date due sticker.  Please ask for any renewal two days before the book is due.  I will not ask for any renewal after the date due since lending libraries will not grant one after the date due.  Only one renewal is allowed per book. If you need the book longer, contact me.

IS THERE A FEE FOR OVERDUE BOOKS?
Yes. Overdue materials can jeopardize our relationship with the lending library. A $4 fee is charged for each book one week overdue. The fee will be added to the LUIS Circulation System. The Business Office will be notified to add the charges to your  account. After the book is two weeks overdue, I will contact the lending library or they will contact me about charges for a lost book.  I will send you another overdue notice with the cost for the lost book and total fees owed. See next question.

WHAT IF I LOSE THE BOOK OR IT IS DAMAGED OR OVERDUE?
You will be charged for any lost items. The lending library sets the price (generally the cost of the book plus a non-refundable processing fee).  You cannot purchase a book online at a much cheaper price as a substitute for the lending libraries fees.  Lending libraries either want their book back or money for the book.  They will not negotiate these fees with patrons (they donít with their own patrons).
