Indiana Section of the Mathematical Association of America
Award for Distinguished College or University Teaching
of Mathematics

Gary Sherman

To the best of our knowledge, a citation was not prepared for the presentation of this award; however, the following article appeared in the Fall 1992 Indiana M.A.A. Section Newsletter.

At the April 11, 1992 Indiana Section meeting Gary Sherman was presented with the first Indiana Section Award for Distinguished College or University Teaching of Mathematics. Gary has been a member of the Mathematics Department at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology for twenty years and has previously received numer-
ous teaching awards. In 1988 he received the Dean's Outstanding Teacher Award at RHIT and in 1990 he was presented with the Rose-Hulman Board of Managers Outstanding Scholar Award. Gary's teaching ability has touched the life of students throughout the country. In 1990 Gary started an REU program at Rose, which
is now recognized as one of the outstanding REU's in the country. Students from his program have published 10 papers, three others are presently-being refereed, and four new papers are being written. In addition twenty student technical reports, have been written.
