Indiana Section of the Mathematical Association of America
Award for Distinguished College or University Teaching
of Mathematics

Citation to

Morteza Shaffi-Mousavi

The Indiana Section Award for Distinguished College or University Teaching of Mathematics annually recognizes the accomplishments and contributions of Section members who have been identified as extraordinarily successful teachers in the mathematical sciences and whose teaching effectiveness has been shown to have had influence beyond their own institutions.

This year's recipient is an excellent teacher who fills many different roles as a teacher. For many years, he has been the leader in developing his department's curriculum including an Honors calculus sequence and an actuarial science program. He has been innovative in his teaching as well, and has played an important role in bringing technological innovations to his department.

In addition to programs for his department, this year's recipient has developed and led programs for elementary school students and for high school mathematics teachers. His vita lists 17 publications related to the teaching of mathematics, and has given many talks at regional and national conferences.

Most importantly, he is very highly thought of by his students. Two former students asked when this award was to be presented so that they could be here; a "Teacher of the Year" awardee credits our recipient for her success; a PHD in economics wrote of his helping her to deal with math anxiety. We clearly have an excellent teacher in our midst tonight!

It is my privilege to present this award to Morteza Shafii-Mousavi, of Indiana University, South Bend.
