Indiana Section of the Mathematical Association of America
Award for Distinguished College or University Teaching
of Mathematics
Citation to
David S. Moore
The Indiana Section Award for Distinguished College or University Teaching
of Mathematics annually observes the accomplishments and contributions of
Section members who have been recognized as extraordinarily successful teachers
in the mathematical sciences and whose teaching effectiveness has been shown
to have had influence beyond their own institutions.
For a quarter of a century, the recipient of the 1994 Award has pursued
a distinguished career as a statistician and statistics educator. He has
been recognized by his students and colleagues at Purdue University as
one of the institution's best teachers. Whether teaching statistics for
freshman liberal arts students or graduate students, he has enriched and
influenced their lives and careers.
He has been at the forefront of statistics teaching reform at both the
pre-college and college levels. His numerous published writings in this
field include textbooks as well as contributions to journals and other
publications of such organizations as the American Statistical Association,
the Conference Board of the Mathematical Sciences, the Mathematical Association
of America, and the National Research Council. His work as statistics
content developer for the Annenberg/Corporation for Public Broadcasting
video projects "For All Practical Purposes: Introduction to Contemporary
Mathematics" and "Against All Odds: Inside Statistics" and the National
Science Foundation-supported video modules "Statistics: Decisions Through
Data" distinguish him as a premier innovator in the field of video telecourse
production in the mathematical sciences.
It is my privilege to present this award to Professor David S. Moore
of Purdue University.
Stanley L. Stephens, Chair
