Indiana Section of the Mathematical Association of America
Award for Distinguished College or University Teaching
of Mathematics
Citation to
David W. Kinsey
The Indiana Section Award for Distinguished College or University Teaching
of Mathematics annually recognizes the accomplishments and contributions
of Section members who have been identified as extraordinarily successful
teachers in the mathematical sciences and whose teaching effectiveness has
been shown to have had influence beyond their own institutions.
This year's recipient is an excellent teacher who has spent many years
leading and building the Mathematics Department at his university. In
fact, he has spent nearly twenty of those years serving as chair or acting
chair of the department.
Over all of this time, his main interest has been in mathematicas education.
In particular, he has been involved in improving the quality of mathematics
education at the secondary level. Over the years, he has conducted numerous
in-service workshops for teachers, made presentations at regional and
national professional meetings, served on various governing boards and
is continually called upon as a resource person in the area of high school
mathematics.
It is clear that his greatest love has been the teaching of mathematics.
His students describe him as demanding but fair, challenging but empathetic.
His colleagues say that "he has never wavered in his support for all of
us . . . he has earned the title of outstanding mathematics educator the
old fashioned way - hard work, honesty, noncompromising standards, compassion,
knowledge, and self-discipline. His zest for life, his love of mathematics
and his compassion for his fellowman make him an outstanding individual
and an outstanding teacher."
It is my privilege to present this award to David Kinsey, of the University
of Southern Indiana.
