Indiana Section of the Mathematical Association of America
Distinguished Service Award
Citation to
Underwood Dudley
The Indiana Section Distinguished Service Award was initiated in 1993 to
honor a member of the Section by acknowledging his or her extraordinary
contributions to the Section and outstanding efforts consistent with the
stated purposes of the Mathematical Association of America and the Section,
namely, assisting in promoting the interests of, and improving education
in, the mathematical sciences in America, especially at the collegiate level.
Among the many Section members deserving such recognition is the one
individual we honor this evening. He has been a very committed Section
member who regularly attends meetings, frequently contributes presentations,
and always is willing to offer his sly and appreciated advice. He served
as Section chair two times -- nearly twenty years apart, and he has also
served the MAA at the national level.
The individual that I am speaking of is Underwood Dudley of DePauw University.
Since arriving at DePauw, Woody has served his department as a superbly
effective classroom teacher and as department chairperson. He is the author
of many articles and books, four of which have been published by the MAA,
and his award-winning writing style has been recognized numerous times
including 1996 when he received the MAA's Trevor Evans award. And who
could ever forget any of Woody's talks -- realistic glimpses of our profession,
sprinkled with subtle humor and always filled with a true sense of the
joy of mathematics. It was no surprise to any of us who know Woody that
he was named an MAA Polya Lecturer for 1995 and 1996 or editor of the
College Mathematics Journal.
Congratulations to Underwood Dudley, the recipient of the Distinguished
Service Award.
