Indiana Section of the Mathematical Association of America
Distinguished Service Award

Citation to

Lowell Beineke

The Indiana Section Distinguished Service Award was initiated in 1993 to honor a member of the Section by acknowledging his or her extraordinary contributions to the Section and outstanding efforts consistent with the stated purposes of the Mathematical Association of America and the Section, namely, assisting in promoting the interests of, and improving education in, the mathematical sciences in America, especially at the collegiate level.

Among the many Section members deserving such recognition is the one individual we honor this evening. He has been one of our most committeed leaders and has always been willing to lead the section and to support other individuals as they work for the section.

The individual that I am speaking of is Lowell Beineke of Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne. Since coming to IPFW, Lowell has served his department as a superbly effective classroom teacher, which we recognized last year by presenting him with the section's Distinguished Teaching Award. As a section, we have also recognized this many other times in the past by selecting him to be an invited speaker at our meetings. He has also been an MAA Visiting Lecturer, and published articles in bother the American Mathematical Monthly and the College Mathematics Journal.

In addition to his herms as vice-chair and chair of the Section from 1986 through 1988, he has completed a term as the Section's Governor, holding that office from 1990 through 1993.

Congratulations to Lowell Beineke, recipient of the 1998 Distinguished Service Award.

Delores Tichenor, Chair
Indiana Section of the Mathematical Association of America

March 20, 1998
