Points that support Free Trade

-Many argue that jobs that are being outsourced would leave regardless of trade policy.  It is argued that for companies to stay competitive and remain in business, they must find least cost methods.  This includes constantly finding ways to reduce their cost which includes finding cheaper labor.  It is also argued by some that if the jobs would not leave the country, they would become automated to reduce costs.

-United States has a comparative advantage in “knowledge work”.  Just like the comparative advantage model, everyone is better off when companies or countries use specialization and trade.

-Even though it is hard to prove exactly why certain jobs are created or terminate, it is estimated that 20 million new jobs have been created in part due to NAFTA.

-Overall level of employment is determined by monetary policy, not trade policy.

-Free trade allows companies a greater supply of raw materials at a lower price.  This allows them to cut costs and be more competitive on the global market.

Points that discourage free trade

-Estimated that 406,000 jobs were outsourced in 2004 compared to 204,000 in 2003.

-Estimated that since January of 2001, 2.7 million manufacturing jobs have left the country.

-It is argued that buying foreign products doesn’t support American jobs.  It is argued that money made in the United States should help support jobs in the U.S. and not support companies to send jobs overseas.

-American workers can not fairly compete with cheap labor because the costs of living in these other countries are so small compared with the U.S.

-71 % of Americans are concerned that with current trends of outsourcing jobs will affect their job security or earning potential.  (BH Careers International)

-66% of Americans say biggest worry is if they will have a job tomorrow. (Fox News June 2003)
