The Steel Bridge Team

BY Brent Nemeth

As one of the highlights of our chapter, our steel bridge team has won national recognition. The 1995 team won bragging rights as being Rose’s first ever to win in regional competition and then going on to place 18th in the nation. Likewise, last year’s team under the leadership of Troy Madlem won in regional competition, and took number fourteen in the nation. And with such a great finish as number fourteen, it is hard to grasp the countless hours that Troy and his team had to put into the design, making, and rehearsal of the project. This goes to show that with the extra effort that I alluded to earlier, that great things can happen for this chapter. For the 1997 contest, Ryan Seavert has emerged as the leader of the team, especially in the design aspect. We are all certain that he and his team will carry on the goal to be the best.

Recycling

BY Suzanne Ellett

The recycling committee is going to be very busy this quarter. We have planned to hold a recycling contest in the dorms. The dorms will collect cans for a certain length of time. Each week, the recycling committee will collect, count, and bag the cans. The dorm that collects the most cans will win a pizza party. This contest will be co-sponsored by RHA who will provide the funds for the pizza party. The contest will end on the same day as Campus Beautification to reinforce environmental responsibility.

The recycling committee also sent out a survey to determine the student body’s awareness and concern with recycling.

Furthermore, we are hoping to get a grant from the state to buy containers. The grant will be written up by Kristen Dahle.

CONCRETE CANOE TEAM- SLOW BUT STEADY

BY Mike Holm

It has been a while since Rose-Hulman has been in the concrete canoe competition, which is held annually in the spring. Because of time constraints and other organizational problems, we have decided to make this into a two year project. For the remainder of this year, we will be in the research and testing phase. We are presently researching materials and canoe design. After we return in the fall of next year we will be able to construct and further test our design to its maximum potential. The members of the team are Mike Holm, Eric Ellis, and Brad Schnarr. We are planning to attend the competition this spring to obtain some new ideas and hopefully learn from the mistakes of others. If you are interested in helping, please contact Mike Holm or Dr. Lobo.
