Senior Design Projects
Group Name: A-Bomb Engineering
Project Title: Assessment of the Farmersburg #1 Mine for Pierson Township
Group Members: Earl Escobar, Project Manager
Our project involves investigating the Farmersburg #1 Coal Mine and reporting present and future concerns of Pierson Townships constituents.
Our group has completed an investigation of Permit S-287 and collected baseline data that can be used for future evaluations.
Skills acquired by the group are involvement with the general public as a client.
Tasks yet to be included are: related investigated issues to citizens of Pierson Township, organize baseline data for future reference, summarize permit into a simplified guide for the citizens investigation.
Group Name: ACC and Associates
Project Title: Code Research for Tank Industry Consultants
Group Members: James Armstrong
Armstrong, Clark, and Colvin Associates (ACC) is working on a project for Tank Industry Consultants, Inc. to determine loading due to wind and seismic considerations. ACC has completed researching three building codes (UBC, SBCCI, and BOCA) and the national standard for steel water tanks (AWWA D100) for wind and seismic design considerations. ACC has also completed programming a spreadsheet to calculate wind loading and the overturning moment. To complete the project ACC must develop a spreadsheet for seismic design and write a final report.
Group Name: Burr Truss Engineering
Project Title: Hopkins Memorial Bridge Design
Group Members: Nathan Kluemper
Burr Truss Engineering (BTE) has taken on the task of designing a timber covered bridge to serve as a memorial for the Hopkins family farm. We have surveyed the bridge vicinity and completed the flood modeling for the stream. BTE has researched the available materials and decided to use Glulam over sawn lumber. We have completed several preliminary designs and our client has recently chosen a mix of the proposed designs. BTE will now proceed with the structural analysis, timber design, pile and cap design, and cost analysis.
Group Name: Coast to Coast Hydraulics
Project Title: Marilyn Road Water Main Extension
Group Members: Blake Gage, Project Manager
Our project originated with the Indiana-American Water Company in Noblesville, Indiana. They requested our services to design a water transmission main to supply a new community in the Noblesville area. The first step of the project involved the acquisition of the required easements for the water line. Then we proceeded to develop a complete set of construction drawings and a complete hydraulic analysis of the system that we are designing. We also have completed a soil investigation that will be used in selecting a final pipe material. During this process we have gained a lot of knowledge in dealing with the public, the local governments, and some of the assumptions used in the engineering of a water transmission line. Through the next weeks we will be completing all of the required permits and construction documents for the project so that Indiana-American Water Company can begin construction as soon as the design is completed.
Group Name: Comfort Builders, Inc.
Project Title: Design of University Village Phase 3
Group Members: Tony Harbath
We are designing Phase 3 of University Village apartments for H & H Development, which will be built near the campus of ISU. Thus far, we have completed all of the necessary research as well as all of the individual unit floor plans. We have learned many important skills such as technical report writing, presenting oral reports, and running effective meetings. Our group has also learned how to incorporate our clients requests into a feasible product. We still must complete the final architectural drawings as well as a detailed cost estimate for the construction of the building before our project will be complete.
Group Name: GRAM Paving Services, Inc.
Project Title: Vermillion County Pavement Management System
Group Members: Kenny Anderson
GRAM is constructing a pavement management system to be used by Vermillion County, Indiana for the purpose of improving its highway maintenance process. Thus far, we have established a pavement condition rating method based on the Ontario Pavement Rating Method, begun work on a computer database program to help automate the maintenance process and have completed all necessary field work. Our group has gained a better understanding of the pavement maintenance process, has developed better presentation skills and have learned how to build a healthy project team-client relationship. This project has enlightened us to the fact that documentation is as important to a project as the project design itself. In the coming weeks, we will be finishing our database, providing documentation for both the database and the pavement condition rating method, and completing our final report and preparing our final presentation.
Group Name: Midwest Consultants
Project Title: Gleaners Foodbank - Facility Assessment
Group Members: Brad Butler
Our group has been performing a facility assessment of the Gleaners Foodbank in Indianapolis. To date we have developed as built drawings on AutoCad. We have also assessed any structural problems we found during a visual inspection of the facility. We identified the problems causes and possible solutions. Also, we have begun an assessment of the structural integrity of structural members using the Visual Analysis Program. During the remainder of the year we will be assessing light intensities and locating HVAC equipment, and preparing a final written report and presentation.
Group Name: Par 4
Project Title: Marshall American Legion Golf Course
Group Members: Scott Blair
Our groups project goal is to design a 9 hole extension to the existing American Legion Golf Course in Marshall, IL. To date, we have completed land selection, multiple course rough designs, and course selection. Most of this work involved the study of "typical" golf course design, a site inspection, and input of the rough designs into AutoCAD. The tasks remaining include the design of an irrigation system, hole detailing, cut and fill calculations, an environmental impact study, and cost calculations.
Group Name: Remington Consultants, Inc.
Project Title: Indianapolis Motor Speedway Project
Group Members: Chip Bradway
Our group was contracted to conduct a topographical survey of the racing surface at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. To date, we have established an inner traverse for control and began stationing of the track. We have learned to work together efficiently, communicate effectively, and to solve problems as a group while practicing engineering. In the following weeks, we will complete our survey, and use the data to draw the required drawings that will accompany our final report.
Group Name: Transcon
Project Title: Six Points-West Perimeter Connector Road
Group Members: Jason Bunselmeier
The Indianapolis Airport Authority contacted us for the design of a rural arterial highway to provide future access to the airport from I-70, U.S. 40 and I-74. Transcon has achieved progress in several areas. The environmental overview is still in progress. Guideline research has been completed, while the geometric alignment is in progress. Pavement design is complete, and the preparation of plan and profiles and details are presently in progress. Hydraulic modeling and erosion control are the major tasks to be completed.
