Dedicated to
Dr. Cecil T. Lobo
1934-1997
A father, teacher, engineer,
and friend to many.
Dr. Cecil Lobo, "Mr. Civil Engineer" at Rose, died the night of Tuesday, May 20th, from a heart attack. Throughout his over 30 years at Rose, he taught countless numbers of students, and helped the ASCE chapter at Rose to be one of the best in the nation.
The first time I met Dr. Lobo, it was to ask for information about a ramp that ASCE did for a newspaper article. He was an exuberant man, full of energy and willingness to get ASCE in the paper. After the publishing of the article, I got to know Dr. Lobo better when I became editor of The Moment.
From then, I got to know him, and in him I saw a lot of what I wanted to become. He was a caring individual, concerned about the students academically and personally. He had a love of the profession, and was committed to instilling into each student not only the knowledge a civil engineer needs, but the sense of professional pride required as well. He encouraged people to be active, not only in their academic career, but in their social and professional ones, too.
It was in this sense I knew Cecil. As The Moment editor, I would occasionally talk with him about the progress of the magazine, and nearly always we would end up talking about other things. Graduates of Rose and their accomplishments, anecdotes from the past, and the courses I would be taking. I always enjoyed these talks, even when what I had intended to be ten minutes lasted over an hour.
I am unfortunate to be a freshman, and not have had a class with Dr. Lobo. I was looking forward to next quarter, when I would have my first class with him, Dynamics. I truly feel that I have missed something, and that, while I am sure my time at Rose will be equally worthwhile with whoever follows him, my education will have a small hole where Cecil Lobo should have been.
