Rose-Hulman News Suzy Carlson Named HCAC Women's Player of the Month

Suzy Carlson -- HCAC Women's Player of the Month

TERRE HAUTE, IND. – Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology senior Suzy Carlson (State College, Pa.) has been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Women's Player of the Month for January in results released today.

To earn the award, Carlson was selected as the top female athlete in any sport at any institution during the month of January by league sports information directors. Each college is permitted one nominee for the entire athletic department per month, and the nine nominees are placed on one ballot for voting.

Carlson has helped Rose-Hulman achieve a 19-3 record and an 11-2 conference mark this season, highlighted by a school record 11-game winning streak.  The Engineers finished 8-1 in the month of January and remain in contention for the HCAC championship.

In January, Carlson averaged 16.4 points, 3.3 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game. The senior connected on 94.6% of her free throw attempts in the month and currently ranks No. 2 nationally in NCAA Division III statistics at 92.0% for the season.

Carlson's most impressive effort in the month was a 27-point performance in a 54-51 win at Defiance.  She added 13 points and nine assists as Rose-Hulman closed the month with a 69-62 victory over Franklin.

In her career, Carlson ranks third in school history with 1,258 points and holds Rose-Hulman's all-time assists record with 301.  She has career shooting percentages of 48% from three-point range and 88.8% from the foul line to currently holds a pair of other school records.

This marks the fifth consecutive month that a Rose-Hulman athlete has been HCAC Player of the Month. Women's tennis player Sam Danesis (September), men's soccer forward David McIlwaine (October), men's basketball forward Brian Bibb (November) and women's basketball forward Rebekah Forsyth (December) have also been named league Player of the Month this year.

Rose-Hulman returns to action in search of its first-ever 20-win season when the Engineers host the College of Mount St. Joseph on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
