ANDERSON, IND. – The Rose-Hulman men's track squad took top honors at 2008 HCAC Championships on Saturday afternoon, while the women's team finished fourth in a strong showing.

The Rose-Hulman men took top honors with 199 points, besting second place Anderson who finished with 193 points.

The Engineer victory marks the first time in 13 years that Anderson University has not won the men's league title and is the first conference title in men's track and field title for Rose-Hulman since 1989.

The feat is also the first time the Engineers have won a track title in the HCAC or its predecessor the ICAC.

Head Coach Larry Cole stated "This championship took a full team effort, which showed by us scoring in every event."  Cole gave a lot of the credit to his seniors, but also recognized the contributions of his underclassmen.

"This team was led by a great group of seniors who performed at their best level when it counted and a group of seniors that was supported by a strong group of underclassmen.  This was truly a team effort in every way," stated Cole.

Senior Thomas Reives (Indianapolis/Aresnal Tech) highlighted the meet for the Engineers by breaking the HCAC Championship record in the triple jump with a leap of 46' 6" and winning the long jump with a jump of 22' 5 3/4".

Reives also earned a pair of fourth place finishes in the high jump with a leap of 6' 5 1/2" and 100-meter dash in 11.32 seconds, as well as being a member of the 4-x-100 relay team that took second in the event.

Senior Matt Repking (Effingham, Ill./Teutopolis) captured a conference title by winning the 3000-meter steeplechase in 9:38.54, besting second place by nearly 20 seconds.

Repking took third place in the 5000-meter run in 15:32.37 to contribute another six points to the winning Rose-Hulman effort.

The Engineers fourth event win came from sophomore Michael Burris (Terre Haute/North) who led a sweep for Rose-Hulman in the 110-meter hurdles, winning the event in 15.13 seconds.  Freshman Jack Lee (Cedarburg, Wis.) and Marcus Peck (Indianapolis/Ben Davis) completed the sweep of the event with Peck taking second place in 15.88 seconds and Lee third in 15.98 seconds.

Burris earned three more top three finishes by placing second in the 400-meter hurdles (55.15), third in the long jump (20' 9 1/4"), and being a member of the 4-x-100 relay team that took second place honors and included freshman Jerry Belton (Chesterfield, Mo./Parkway West) and Paul Bouagnon (St. Charles, Ill./Burlington Central) along with Reives.

Bouagnon tallied two more top three finishes by placing third in the 200-meter dash in 22.77 seconds and being a key member of the 4-x-400 meter relay team of senior Bill Guiney (Centerville, Ohio) and sophomores Will Reilly (Indianapolis/North Central) and Travis Vanderberg (Kansas City, Mo./West) that placed second in 3:24.99 to seal the men's title for the Engineers.

Reilly also contributed to the Rose-Hulman effort by adding a third place finish in the 400-meter dash in 51.04 and a fifth place effort in the 200-meter dash in 23.30 seconds.

Other top finishers for the Rose-Hulman men included sophomore Calvin Bueltel (Huntingburg/Southridge) who took second place honors in the 100-meter dash (11.13) and fourth in the 200-meter dash (22.96), junior Ian Thomas (Pennville/Jay County) who placed third in the 10,000-meter run (33:57.94) and fourth in the 5000-meter run (15:44.53), freshman David Caldwell (Plymouth) who took third place honors in the 3000-meter steeplechase (10:03.23), and junior Vince Forcellini (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain) who placed third in the javelin with a toss of 164' 7".

The Engineer women scored 102 points as a team to earn fourth place honors and were led by seniors Janel Belton (Chesterfield, Mo./Parkway West) and Rachel Krasich (Westfield).

Belton took the HCAC title in the shot put with a winning throw of 40' 11 3/4" and placed second in the discus with a mark of 126' 5".
