  Rose-Hulman News 11 Top Two Finishes Lead Engineer
Swimming to Strong Effort at Monmouth
 

Rose-Hulman enjoyed a strong finish at the Monmouth Invite.

MEET RESULTS

MONMOUTH, ILL. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology recorded 11 top-two finishes to help the men's squad place second and the women finish fourth at the Monmouth College Invitational on Saturday.

The men's squad recorded three first place efforts and three second-place finishes to finish second in the eight-team event.  Junior Brian Yount (Bloomington, Ill.) won the 50-freestyle with a time of 23.05.  Junior Clayton Shotwell (Arcadia/Hamilton Heights) added top honors in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:23.34.  Junior Landry Carbo (Lafayette, La./Episcopal of Acadiana) rounded out the first place performances in the 100-butterfly (56.35).

Second-place finishers for the Engineers included Carbo in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:10.87.  Freshman Ben Sollman (North Vernon/Jennings County) pitched in with two second-place finishes with efforts in the 100-backstroke (58.06) and the 200-backstroke (2:07.19).

Senior Steven Vande Lune (Kokomo) contributed three third-place finishes to Rose-Hulman's effort.  He placed third in the 100-freestyle (50.48), 200-freestyle (1:51.41) and 500-freestyle (5:07.73).  Shotwell also finished third in the 100-breaststroke in a time of 1:05.67.  The 200-yard medley relay squad of Sollman, Shotwell, Carbo and Yount placed third in 1:45.06.

The women's squad relied on two first-place finishes, three runner-ups and four third-place efforts to tally a fourth-place finish.  Sophomore Katie Trella (Des Plaines, Ill./Maine Township) earned both victories with strong performances in the 200-yard freestyle (2:07.92) and 1650-freestyle (19:23.20).

Three Engineers pitched in with second-place efforts.  Junior Stephanie Hance (Noblesville) recorded second in the 200-backstroke (2:25.32), sophomore Caitlin Kohli (Lima, Ohio/Bath) added second in the 1650-freestyle (19:55.87) and Trella was second in the 500-freestyle (5:36.59).

Three individuals and one relay performance rounded out the top-three efforts for the women's squad.  Kohli came home third in the 500-freestyle (5:48.31), with Hance (1:07.89 in the 100-backstroke) and junior Deb Aleksa (Glendale, Ariz./Dear Valley) (5:09.28 in the 400-individual medley) also placing third.

The relay team of sophomore Rachelle Cobb (Vancouver, Wash./Columbia River), sophomore Heather Wiest (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove), Hance and Trella added a third in the 200-freestyle relay (1:51.97).

Rose-Hulman returns to action at the Wabash College Invitational next Friday and Saturday.
