  Rose-Hulman News Men's Swimming and Diving Wins Rose Relays;
Women's Squad Comes Home Second
 

The Engineer swimming and diving teams each placed second in the Rose-Hulman Double Dual on Saturday.

MEET RESULTS

TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology placed second in both the men's and women's competition at the Engineer Swimming and Diving Double Dual at the Sports and Recreation Center on Saturday.

Wabash College captured top honors in the men's competition, with Rose-Hulman defeating Illinois Wesleyan for second place.  The Titans topped the Engineers in the women's matchup.

The men's effort featured two event victories and eight top-three finishes.  Sophomore diver Michael Gerdov (Lincolnshire, Ill./Adlai Stevenson) paced the effort with victories in one-meter and three-meter diving.  Gerdov scored 227.33 in one-meter and added a tally of 192.08 in the three-meter event.

Senior Matthew Melton (Griffith) provided depth with a second-place effort in three-meter diving (179.70) and a third in one-meter (181.95).

Senior Steven Vande Lune (Kokomo) paced the men's swimming effort with two individual third-place finishes.  Vande Lune came home third in the 200-freestyle (1:53.14) and 500-freestyle (5:08.33) events.

Junior Clayton Shotwell (Arcadia/Hamilton Heights) added a third-place effort in the 200-breaststroke in 2:27.33.  The 400-freestyle relay team of junior Brian Yount (Bloomington, Ill.), freshman Andrew McCurry (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine Township), freshman Ben Sollman (North Vernon/Jennings County) and Vande Lune rounded out the third places with a time of 3:28.36.

On the women's side, sophomore Katie Trella (Des Plaines, Ill./Maine Township) led the effort with a victory in the 1,000-yard freestyle and a second-place in the 500-freestyle.  Trella won the 1,000 in 11:32.03 and added a time of 5:40.49 in the 500.

Junior Stephanie Hance (Noblesville) recorded three second-place finishes for the Engineers.  Hance placed second in the 100-backstroke (1:07.38), the 200-backstroke (2:25.30) and the 100-butterfly (1:06.67).

Junior Deborah Aleksa (Glendale, Ariz./Dear Valley) added a second-place finish in the 200-individual medley (2:31.72) and a third in the 200-freestyle (2:15.61).  Sophomore Heather Weist (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) pitched in with third-place finishes in the 50-freestyle (28.63), 200-backstroke (2:34.03) and the 200-individual medley (2:37.04).

Rose-Hulman returns to action with a home dual meet against Millikin University next Saturday at 1 p.m. to wrap up three consecutive weeks of home meets at the Sports and Recreation Center Natatorium.
