Sean Helliwell has led the Rose-Hulman Institute
of Technology men's soccer team into its first ever NCAA
Division III Tournament appearance in his first year at the
college.
Helliwell has led the Engineers to a 14-4-3
record entering tournament play in a season that includes the
first conference championships in school history. Rose-Hulman
claimed both the regular season and tournament titles in the
Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference under the leadership of
Helliwell this fall.
Helliwell became the fourth head coach in the history of men’s soccer at Rose-Hulman.
He took over for Brad Hauter, who compiled a record of 55-37-5 in five seasons
before accepting the head coaching position at DePauw University in 2008.
Helliwell spent the previous two seasons as assistant coach at NCAA Division I
Western Kentucky University. In January, the Hilltoppers announced a
discontinuation of the soccer program for the 2008 campaign.
Prior
to accepting the Western Kentucky position, Helliwell served as the head soccer
coach at Greenwood High School in Bowling Green, Ky. He compiled a 155-56-17
record in a tenure that featured nine district, four regional and two sectional
championships. His 2004 squad placed second in the Kentucky State Tournament.
Helliwell is actively involved in the Olympic Development Program in Region 2
and will serve as the assistant coach for the 93 Boys Regional team this summer.
In his
collegiate career, Helliwell played four seasons and served as team captain for
three years at the University of Southern Indiana, prior to earning his
bachelor’s degree in 1995.
The efforts in 2008 have continued a recent tradition of success
for Rose-Hulman soccer. The Engineers placed second in the HCAC in 2006
and 2007, while compiling a record of 41-14-6 over the past three seasons.
