CRAWFORDSVILLE, IND. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of
Technology scored three goals in the first 35 minutes to defeat
Wabash College 4-2 in men's soccer action on Wednesday.
Junior Mitch Buffington (O'Fallon, Ill.)
scored just 23 seconds into the match courtesy of a pass from
senior Rhys Evans (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest) to give
the Engineers a 1-0 lead.
After a score by Dylan Andrew from Wabash knotted
the score at 1-1, sophomore Tim Hollingshead (St. Peter's,
Mo./Lutheran St. Charles) answered two scores before
halftime to give Rose-Hulman control of the match.
Hollingshead scored his first career goal in the
27th minute on an assisted effort. His second goal took
just eight more minutes, as sophomore Clint Vatterrodt
(Bloomington, Ill./ University) provided an assist.
Wabash closed within 3-2 at halftime on a late
first half score by Austin Jennings. The defenses stepped
up in the second half, with Buffington providing an unassisted
goal in the 58th minute for the only score of the second half.
The evenly played match ended with Wabash
narrowly outshooting Rose-Hulman 20-18. The tandem of
senior Andy Cheung (Beaufort, S.C./Beaufort Academy) and
junior Andy Kruth (Cedar Park, Texas/Vista Ridge)
combined for three saves on the afternoon.
Rose-Hulman improved to 2-2-1 and continues one
of the nation's most challenging schedules with a trip to No. 6
ranked
Ohio Wesleyan on Friday night. The Fightin' Engineers will
also face undefeated Oberlin on Saturday at Ohio Wesleyan.
