TERRE HAUTE, IND.  -- The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology rifle team opened its 2009 season with a strong team performance to nearly defeat NCAA Division I Tennessee-Martin on Sunday at the Cook Stadium Range.

The Fightin' Engineers recorded a total score of 4,488 against the NCAA Division I opponent. 

Senior Lucas Weir (Martinsville, Ill.) led the Engieners with personal best scores in both smallbore and air rifle.  Weir recorded a 575 in air rifle and added 566 in smallbore.

Senior Brian Telljohann (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) pitched in with a 559 in air rifle and personal bests of 557 in smallbore and 1,116 overall.

Senior Eddie Mayhew (Terre Haute) and senior Derek Adler (Stroudsburg, Pa.) also crossed the 1,100-point mark in the solid team performance.  Junior Parker Lee (Swannanoa, N.C./C.D. Owen) contributed to the team score with a 559 in air rifle.

The team recorded its best overall score in over five years with a 4,488 for the full course.  Rose-Hulman returns to action at Akron University on Saturday.
