Rose-Hulman News Men's Soccer Picked First, Women Selected Third
in HCAC Preseason Polls

Rhys Evans -- 2008 HCAC Men's Soccer Player of the Year

TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology men's soccer team has been chosen as the preseason Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference title favorite, while the women's squad was picked third by league coaches in preseason poll results released today.

The men's squad received 8.5 of a possible nine first-place votes from league coaches.  The Fightin' Engineers return nine starters from the 2008 HCAC championship squad that reached the NCAA Division III Tournament for the first time in school history.  Transylvania University was picked second in the preseason poll.

Senior Rhys Evans (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest) earned league Most Valuable Player honors last season and returns along with first-team honorees Corbin Clow (Martinsville) and John Hollingshead (St. Peter's, Mo./Lutheran).

Sean Helliwell claimed HCAC Coach of the Year accolades, and sophomore Clint Vatterrodt (Bloomington, Ill./ University) captured league Newcomer of the Year honors last fall.

Molly Richardson -- two-time all-HCAC selection

On the women's side, Transylvania University was selected by seven of the league's nine coaches as the title favorite.  Mount St. Joseph earned runner-up honors, with Rose-Hulman finishing third and receiving one first-place vote.

Two-time all-conference standout Molly Richardson (Orange Park, Fla./St. John's Country Day) leads the returnees for the Engineers after tallying 35 goals and 83 points in two seasons.

Juniors Eli Baca (Santa Fe, N.M.) and Annmarie Stanley (Warrenville, Ill./Rosary) join Richardson and sophomore Julie Brennan (Indianapolis/Pike) as returning all-league players from 2008.

The 2009 Rose-Hulman men's and women's soccer seasons will begin on Sept. 1, when both squads travel to Earlham for an in-state matchup.
