Your guide to all things Session 1! We'll do our absolute best to keep this updated on a daily basis. Don't forget to check out the photos page as well!
It rained. Hard. We were bringing 35 people back from Midnight Madness at Steak 'n Shake and started seeing bullet-sized drops of rain hitting the windshield. But, Steak 'n Shake was still great; we had some new inductees into the goodness of Steak 'n Shake as well as some veteran Steakburger lovers. It didn't matter in the end though; the noobs and the veterans both sucked down their Hand-Dipped shakes with no problems.
Earlier in the afternoon, we took a group of 20 monkeys to Xtreme Lazer Tag for a couple of games. Some went for the opposing bases, some went for the highest kills honor, and everyone had a blast! At the end, a couple vans went to Taco Bell for a post-game fill up.
Today the monkeys got settled into the routine with morning meeting and projects in the morning, with faculty lectures and more group project work in the afternoon. After dinner, students went on any number of trips. Some of them went to Ritter's Frozen Custard for some delicious after-dinner treats; others joined in a Euchre tournament and other card games around BSB. At 11:30, two groups went to midnight premieres of Toy Story 3 and Jonah Hex. Most of those still around and awake went out for a rousing game of Capture the Flag across the Rose campus.
A chorus of yawns could be heard for the first time today in E-104, where daily morning meetings are held (every day but Sunday), as all 104 Catamonkeys filed in. After some announcements, the monkeys were treated to a brief session from Rose-Hulman's librarians that covered all the resources available to them while they're here. After that, the professors hosted some teaming exercises (in one, students had to come up with innovative ideas to save a bankrupt card company and then sell those ideas to their fellow students with the promise of a bag of Starburst for the winners). The students then selected their projects and headed off to lunch at the ARA.

We had a great time welcoming the rest of the Catamonkeys (our affectionate name for the students) to campus today! All the students attended the opening ceremony, where Dr. Brackin (Head of Catapult) introduced all the faculty members and Erik Hayes (Assistant Dean of Students) introduced the student counselors. All the faculty members also talked about their projects with the students.
On the fun side, the faculty members cooked brats and burgers for the monkeys in the Worx. After that, Pat and Eric and the rest of the counselors put on an awesome luau party with lots of limbo, dancing, and music. The ever popular 'make-your-own-sundae' made an appearance at the luau, as did the venerable sno-cone machine. Even the heavy downpour outside couldn't dampen the spirits of Catapult's first day.
