Student Services
HEALTH SERVICESHealth
Services is primarily interested in the prevention of disease and the treatment
of minor injuries and acute illnesses. The Institute maintains limited health
care services, with a nurse and a physician who keep limited office hours on
campus five days a week. A medical form sent to all entering students requests a
thorough physical examination, history of immunizations and other background
information. These records are kept on file in the Health Services office and
are mandatory conditions of enrollment.
The
Institute cannot assume responsibility for the regular treatment of a
student’s chronic condition present when the student enters the Institute;
however, the Health Service will supervise the treatment and general health
while the student is under the care of the family physician. Ordinarily, common
medicines and drugs are furnished free. Certain services, such as X-ray
examinations, special drugs and laboratory tests are not available. These can be
obtained off campus via orders from the Health Service.
As a branch of the Health Office,
Student Counseling Services is available to provide professional counseling
services for students dealing with personal or academic concerns. Services
include crisis intervention, assessment, career counseling, and personal
counseling for individuals, couples, and groups. Consultation services and
educational workshops are also offered to student groups, faculty, and staff
regarding such issues as stress management, academic achievement, relationship
difficulties, and alcohol use. The staff is compromised of masters level
counselors currently enrolled in the Counseling Psychology doctoral program at
Indiana State University. These services are confidential and free of charge for
Rose-Hulman students.
ACADEMIC ADVISEMENT
At registration, each freshman is
introduced to a member of the faculty who will serve as the student’s academic
adviser. The academic adviser has a dual function of assisting the student with
course planning and helping with problems related to college work and life on
campus. In the middle of each grading period students receive progress reports
through their adviser, providing the opportunity to discuss any problems related
to academic progress. Students should feel welcome to visit with their academic
advisers at any time.
THE LEARNING CENTER
The
Learning Center, located in the lower level of the Logan Library, offers
academic assistance in the areas of chemistry, computer science, math, physics,
and writing. Peer tutors—specially trained students supervised by professional
staff—do the majority of tutoring at the Center, working one-on-one with
students. Our Supplemental Instruction program offers biweekly group study
sessions for targeted freshman courses. Professors encourage students to
participate in study sessions held at the Learning Center or take writing
assignments there before they are submitted.
The
Learning Center also offers end-of-the-quarter review sessions for several
freshman and sophomore level computer science, chemistry, math and physics
courses. Handouts and tests are on file for many humanities and social science
courses and several lower level math and science courses. Help with study skills
and with preparation of resumes is available, and the Learning Center sponsors
special evening sessions on topics ranging from “Conquering Test Anxiety and
Managing Stress” to “Using Powerpoint for Oral Reports.”
The
Learning Center is open from 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. every school day and is open
Sunday-Thursday nights from 7-9 p.m. Additional tutoring appointment times and
individualized tutoring schedules are available upon request.
RETENTION
During the last 5-10 years, Rose-Hulman has graduated approximately 75% of those
students who first entered as freshmen. Over the ten-year period experience has
been that from 6-8 percent of entering freshmen withdraw during or at the end of
the freshman year, another 8-12 percent leave by the end of the sophomore year,
and approximately 4 percent at some point in their junior or senior years. A
majority of those who choose to leave the Institute do so to pursue degree
programs not offered by Rose-Hulman.
CAREER SERVICES AND EMPLOYER RELATIONS
The Career Services Office counsels and assists graduates in securing employment in the professions, business and industry. It establishes contact with prospective employers, as well as graduate schools, aids in the preparation of applications, and arranges appointments and interviews. The Office also assists students in obtaining part-time, summer employment, and cooperative experiences as well as placement upon graduation. They also assist with resume writing, cover letters, and employer searches.
The
placement record has been an outstanding one. Over 300 recruiters come to
Rose-Hulman annually to offer a variety of positions. Each Rose-Hulman graduate
has several on-campus interviews and often more than one job offer from which to
choose. Graduates are currently working in all 50 states and in 20 foreign
countries.
Services
are also available to alumni seeking employment. Employers seeking experienced
personnel file their job needs with the Career Services Office, which, in turn,
posts these opportunities on the alumni web site.
Through
continuous contacts with business and industry and communications with
Rose-Hulman personnel, information regarding part-time jobs on and off campus is
recorded in the Career Services Office. Students seeking part-time employment
are encouraged to contact this office regarding job opportunities.
